Sleep On It: The Engineering Case for Better Rest

Sleep is often viewed as a luxury or a byproduct of a productive day, but the research suggests it is actually a foundational requirement for cognitive performance. This post explores the engineering case for rest, focusing on how sleep facilitates memory consolidation, creative problem-solving, and emotional regulation, and why skipping it is one of the most expensive technical debts you can accrue.

A Genetic Algorithm for Optimizing Fantasy Football Trades with Playoff Biasing

This research introduces a genetic algorithm designed to automate the discovery of mutually beneficial fantasy football trades, specifically biasing toward late-season playoff performance. By utilizing custom mutations and team-specific elitism, the model evolves trades that improve projected point totals for both partners while maintaining a level of perceived fairness necessary for successful negotiation.

Real-time detection of linear and nonlinear resonance modes in automatic transmission driveline: A novel algorithm for enhanced reliability

This paper proposes an algorithm for the real-time detection of linear and nonlinear resonance modes in rotating driveline shafts using an onboard transmission control module (TCM). By utilizing Order-based Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) on vibration signals from integrated speed sensors, the algorithm enables the detection of natural frequencies across wide operating ranges, providing a crucial tool for mitigating fatigue failures caused by cyclic loading in medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles.
