Skyscanner

A powerful flight search tool for finding cheap fares across airlines, routes, and booking providers.

Skyscanner is best thought of as a fare discovery engine. It aggregates prices from airlines, OTAs (online travel agencies), and third-party booking sites, making it useful for spotting cheaper or less obvious routing options.

Why I use it

  • Wide price aggregation: Skyscanner pulls from a large mix of airlines and online travel agencies. This sometimes surfaces lower fares that don’t show up directly on airline websites or in simpler search tools.
  • Great for flexible travel planning: It’s especially strong when your destination or dates are flexible, since it makes it easy to compare broad options instead of fixed itineraries.
  • Strong discovery features: Tools like “Everywhere” and flexible date grids make it easy to reverse the usual search process (start with price, then pick destination).

Top Tips

  • Use “Everywhere” search: If your priority is price over destination, search from your home airport to “Everywhere”. This shows destinations ranked by lowest available fares, which is useful for spontaneous or budget-first travel planning.
  • Use month or flexible date views: Instead of locking in exact dates, use “Whole month” or flexible date calendar views. This helps identify price swings of sometimes hundreds of dollars just by shifting departure by a day or two.
  • Compare booking sources carefully: Skyscanner often routes you to third-party booking sites or smaller OTAs. Before booking, check who the actual seller is and compare with the airline’s direct price (sometimes only slightly higher, but with better support if changes happen).
  • Watch baggage rules closely: Budget fares surfaced on Skyscanner can exclude carry-on or checked bags. Always verify baggage allowance, seat selection fees, and change/cancellation rules, as these can erase the savings if you’re not careful.

One limitation to understand

Skyscanner is not a direct booking platform. Prices are sometimes:

  • Slightly outdated by the time you click through
  • Different once you reach the airline or OTA site

So it’s best used for discovery, not blind booking.
