Global Entry + TSA PreCheck

The best time-saving upgrade for international travelers, providing expedited security and customs clearance.

If you travel internationally even a few times, Global Entry is one of the best time-saving upgrades you can get. It costs about $120 for 5 years and includes both TSA PreCheck (domestic) and Global Entry (international).

Why it’s worth it

  • Global Entry is the real benefit: TSA PreCheck speeds up domestic security, but Global Entry is what makes international travel smoother. Instead of waiting in long customs lines after landing in the U.S., you can usually clear immigration in a few minutes using kiosks or designated processing lanes.
  • Cost vs Value: At about $120 for 5 years (approximately $24/year), the cost is minimal for the time saved. Many travel credit cards will reimburse this fee every four to five years. The Fidelity Visa Signature Card is a no fee credit card that reimburses up to $100.

Application process

Global Entry requires:

  1. Online application and background check
  2. Conditional approval
  3. One in-person interview (or enrollment on arrival at select airports)

The interview is typically short and straightforward. Officers already have your application and background information, so it’s mainly verification. The important thing is consistency with what you submitted.

Global Entry Mobile (official app feature)

At select airports, Global Entry members can use the official Global Entry Mobile app to speed up processing. Instead of using a kiosk, you can:

  • Select your arrival airport
  • Take a live photo/selfie
  • Submit your customs declaration from your phone
  • Receive a digital receipt to show to CBP

When supported, this can make the arrival process even faster and more streamlined than the traditional kiosk flow.

Renewals

Renewals are often simpler than the initial application:

  • Many renewals are approved online without an interview.
  • Some cases still require an interview depending on eligibility review.

Practical takeaway

TSA PreCheck improves departure experience in the U.S. Global Entry improves arrival experience back into the U.S. The combination is mostly about saving time and removing friction from airport travel, especially after long international flights.
